Advanced Innovation Grants
The Advanced Innovation Grants (AIG) supports projects beyond early stages, enabling larger-scale applications and multicenter research. It funds research with strong potential for implementation and real-world impact.
Core Principles of the AIG
Translational Focus:
Support projects that can be translated directly into actionable outcomes for orthodontic practice. This includes technologies, techniques, or methodologies that have the potential to enhance patient care, improve treatment outcomes, and advance the field of orthodontics.
Diverse Stakeholder Involvement:
Encourages collaboration among academia, industry, and research institutions. Multidisciplinary approach aims to bring together diverse expertise to create well-rounded and innovative solutions applicable across different sectors of orthodontics.
Feasibility and Scalability:
Prioritizes projects that demonstrate strong potential for implementation and scalability. Successful proposals must show that the proposed innovation is not only scientifically sound but also practical and capable of being adapted for widespread use in clinical settings.
To ensure alignment with these principles, the AIG program outlines specific criteria and expectations for AIG applicants as detailed in the structured framework:
Funding Amount
Preliminary Data Requirement

Terms & Conditions for the Application of the IOF Research Grants
A. General Provisions
1. The International Orthodontics Foundation Advanced Innovation Grants ("AIG") are offered by the International Orthodontics Foundation Limited ("IOF") to support advanced-stage research and innovation in orthodontics, with a focus on translational outcomes, clinical implementation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
2. To ensure fairness, transparency, and effective execution of the AIG, IOF has implemented these terms and conditions (the "Terms & Conditions") for the application process.
B. Application and Award of AIG
1. The 2025–2026 AIG timeline is:
(1) Announcement and Letter of Intent (LOI) Submission: July 2025
(2) LOI Deadline: September 30th, 2025
(3) Full Proposal Invitation: December 1st, 2025
(4) Full Proposal Deadline: February 28th, 2026
(5) Review and Final Approval: Spring 2026
(6) Project Execution Begins: May 2026
2. AIGs offer project-based funding, typically up to USD 100,000, with project durations defined in the proposal and agreed upon during grant approval.
3. Applicant Criteria:
(1) Must demonstrate robust preliminary data validating scientific rationale and translational potential.
(2) Projects must aim to translate validated innovations (e.g., technologies, techniques, or methodologies) into actionable clinical use.
(3) Must involve multidisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder engagement, including academic, clinical, and industry partners.
(4) Principal Investigators must be affiliated with a research institution, university, hospital, or other entity with capacity to execute the project.
(5) Non-orthodontic applicants must partner with an orthodontic expert and demonstrate relevance to orthodontic practice.
4. Applications are processed in multiple phases:
(1) Phase One: Preliminary review by the Medical Operation Group within 15 working days of submission.
(2) Phase Two: Applicants will be notified via email. If rejected, applicants may resubmit an updated version by the deadline.
' 5. Selected applicants must confirm acceptance of the grant within ten (10) working days of receiving the Award Notification. Non-response will be considered a rejection.
6.Acceptance requires signing of a research grant agreement and compliance with these Terms & Conditions.
7.Applicants may revise and resubmit previously unfunded proposals with significant updates.
C. Budget and Justification Terms
1. Funds must be used solely for execution of the approved AIG project.
2 .Any material change in project scope, budget, or deliverables requires IOF’s prior written approval. Contact style="">@iofglobal.org for budgetary amendments.
3.If the AIG supports only part of a larger project, applicants must disclose all co-funding sources, amounts, and the division of scope.
4. AIGs do not fund:
(1) Transportation expenses exceeding 10% of the total grant (unless for research collaboration or relevant workshops; coach class maximum);
(2) General electronic devices (e.g., laptops, phones), unless specifically justified;
(3) Faculty salaries, stipends, or tuition fees;
(4) Entertainment, organizational dues, or unrelated illustration/marketing expenses;
(5) Misuse of leftover funds. Any surplus must be reported to IOF for reassignment.
D. Grants Payment
1. Grants are paid to an accredited institution (university, hospital, etc.).
2. If awarded to an individual PI, funds are disbursed to the PI’s host institution, which will be jointly responsible for financial and project oversight.
E. Project Timeline & Continuity
1. Grantees must begin the project within six (6) months from the fund transfer date. Delays beyond this period will lead to grant cancellation and possible repayment.
2. IOF will provide review feedback to all applicants, funded or unfunded, to encourage quality improvement in future submissions.
F. Progress and Final Reporting
1. Mid-project progress updates may be required depending on project length and milestones.
2. A comprehensive Final Report must be submitted within six (6) months of project completion unless an extension is pre-approved.
3. Failure to submit the Final Report on time without extension approval may disqualify the Grantee and Host from future IOF grants for one (1) year.
4. A financial report must accompany the Final Report, detailing the use of AIG funds and any co-funding.
G. Intellectual Property and Publication
1. Grantees are encouraged to publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and must acknowledge IOF funding in all related outputs.
2. IOF reserves the right to publicly share summaries of funded projects, including PI names and project status.
3. IOF may distribute submitted reports for transparency and learning purposes.
4. Any act of plagiarism, data fabrication, or misrepresentation will result in permanent ineligibility for future IOF funding.
